Overall Course Overview

In response to increased global attention to gender issues, there is a growing need co

about the situation of women and men in our society today – and references from key documents that highlight policies formulated to address gender concerns. Recent events have shown that if governments are serious about achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG’s, it is essential that gender be taken into account for all the goals. Gender equality in the SDGs touches almost exclusively on the area of education, and research does show the importance of equality in this area, but this is not sufficient.

COURSE CONTENT

1. Introduction to Gender Studies:

   • Overview of key concepts and theories in gender studies.

   • Understanding the social construction of gender roles.

2. Gender and Development Theories:

   • Exploration of various theoretical frameworks that examine the relationship between gender and development.

3. Women’s Rights and Empowerment:

   • Examination of historical and contemporary struggles for women’s rights.

   • Strategies for promoting women’s empowerment.

4. Gender and Economic Development:

   • Analysis of gender disparities in economic participation.

   • Exploration of policies and practices for promoting gender-inclusive economic development.

5. Gender and Health:

   • Study of gender-specific health issues and access to healthcare.

   • Analysis of the impact of health policies on different genders.

6. Gender and Education:

   • Examination of gender disparities in education.

   • Strategies for promoting gender equality in educational settings.

7. Gender and Politics:

   • Exploration of the role of gender in political systems.

   • Analysis of women’s participation in politics and leadership.

8. Research Methods in Gender Studies:

   • Training in qualitative and quantitative research methods specific to gender studies.

   • Application of research methods to address gender-related issues.

9. Social and Cultural Dimensions of Gender:

   • Analysis of cultural norms and societal expectations related to gender.

   • Examination of how gender intersects with other social categories such as race, class, and sexuality.

10. Gender and Environment:

    • Exploration of the gender dimensions of environmental issues.

    • Strategies for promoting gender-sensitive environmental policies and practices.

11. Advocacy and Policy Development:

    • Development of skills for advocating gender-sensitive policies.

    • Understanding the role of advocacy in promoting gender equality.

Assignments: There are four assignments (continuous assessment tests), research paper and one examination to be offered at the end of the course. Assignments account for 40%, research paper counts for 30%, while the Final Exam accounts for 30% of the total mark. Upon completion of the course, you shall be issued with a Diploma Certificate and a course transcript.

Examination Certificate and Transcripts will be sent after successful completion of the course.
